Inspiring Notes

Do you listen to music while you write?

If so, what kind?

Classical?

Jazz?

Rock?

Christian?

Or...?

Do you listen on

Spotify?

Pandora?

CD?

MP3?

Windows Media?

Does it serve as white noise or act as inspiration? Or both?

Some days I like the soothing notes of my Pandora selections and other days I prefer no music at all. It depends on my mindset and what I'm writing.

In Case You Missed It...

The giveaway for Jody Hedlund's latest book, Unending Devotion, ends tomorrow at 5 pm EST. The interview and giveaway details can be found on Monday's post.

So tell us, does music fill your writing space and inspire the flow of words? If not, what type of music do you prefer when not writing?

Happy weekend,
Karen

  1. That's a lot of questions for so early in the morning!
I listen to rock-metal-progressive and usually on my iTouch. (The docking system has great speakers.) Sometimes I throw on Pandora. There's always music when I'm writing though.
And sometimes the TV is on as well!

  2. Very rarely do I listen to music when I write and I find it distracting although once I put on some old romance music when I was writing romance:)

  3. I prefer quiet when I write. TV distracts me and music makes me want to dance.

  4. Alex,
Sorry about the questions! Just testing to see how awake you all are. :)

    Terri,
Okay, so it isn't just me then. I can find it distracting too, depending on what I'm writing. Good to know I'm not the only one! :)

    Linda,
And you are another one, yay! Like I told Terri, thought maybe I was the only one here. Lol, music makes me want to dance sometimes too! :)

    Blessings,
    Karen

  5. I've always got music going, but I'm not so sure it isn't an impediment to writing. I'm a huge Jango fan (Pandora burnt a bridge with me when they started interrupting music to solicit paid continuance). I'm also a huge fan of sattelite music on TV.

  6. Yup, quiet for me, too!

I like to listen to the French Canadian stations in the car, via satellite radio...such a nerd! :)

  7. Hi Karen! Great questions! Most of the time, I don't listen to music, but other times, I do. It always has to be fairly quiet and not too "dance-able"! Usually music from the 50s, 60s, 70s. Other times, Easy Listening, or Big Bands, or Classic Country...As you can see, I like almost any kind of music. BUT, when I listen as I write, it can't be coming from my laptop, like Pandora. It has to be in another room...otherwise, it's too distracting!

  8. Kathleen,
I'll have to check out Jango. I don't care for the ads on Pandora but just have put up with them. :)

    Cheryl,
You're not a nerd! Hey, if you like the music, why not? :)

    Becky,
Yes, I am better if the music is going in the other room too (like right now, actually, lol).

Always good to see you all,
    Karen

  9. I play everything from rock to movie soundtracks to new age. Depends on the mood of what I am writing at the time.

  10. I do, only because it's on at the coffee shop where I do almost all of my writing. Since it's music and doesn't involve someone kicking or hitting someone else; no one's knocking on the bathroom door where I'm hiding; and no one's asking me where their tube socks are, I can write like crazy with this music on.

    :D

    True words.

  11. Diane,
Sounds like you like an assortment. When I do listen, I am like you - depends on my mood. :)

    Rhonda,
LOL - true words! Indeed, they are! We toss that little phrase around a bit here too. :) Great minds...

    Blessings,
    Karen

  12. I listen to soft classical on the satellite TV. Beautiful music. Sometimes I stop and close my eyes and just drift on the strings.

  13. Classical or instrumental jazz to lure the writing muse...
Vocal jazz for chillaxing and unwinding...
    Gospel music as a pick-me-upper...
    Different music for different purposes/occasions!

  14. I prefer silence when I write, but sometimes I'll be in the mood to listen to music. It can't have any lyrics, though, so I tend to listen to intrumental movie soundtracks.

  15. I usually write when Hubby is trying to sleep, so I have learned to enjoy the peace and quiet when I write.

  16. I turn on Pandora but find I tune it out more often than not. So it becomes white noise. I am a big fan of silence and find it truly golden:)

  17. Hi Karen...Definitely no music while I write. Quiet. When not writing, I love to listen to country (Vince Gil), Placido Domingo, Josh Groban, Kathy Matea, and piano music, to name a few. Susan

  18. I like quiet when I write, but I don't mind normal house and neighborhood noise ... it is rather soothing. Puttery noise.

    Fondly,
    Glenda

  19. Hi Karen -- I'm one who likes total silence when I write. For me, music (mostly easy listening/light rock, country, or classical) is for walking, exercise, or just relaxing.

  20. I listen to old hymns. Partly because I really do love them, and mainly because I want to get into my historical characters' heads. Instrumental is better as the words don't mess with my thinking. xx

  21. Joylene,
I enjoy soft music too, it seems to inspire and refresh somehow too. :)

    Michelle,
I like your breakdown! It sounds like you get plenty of inspiration. :)

    Lynda,
Silence for me too, mostly. When I am working on editing, sometimes I can have music going.

    Cecelia,
Peace and quiet is very nice, isn't it? :)

    Sally,
Why is it that we can tune certain things out and not others? I agree; silence is golden!

    Susan,
Another quiet girl like me - I like my music otherwise, but not so much when writing. :)

    Glenda,
Background noise is okay for me too, with the exception of the neighbor's barking dogs. :(

    Patricia,
Nice and quiet, yes, me too! I like to walk to music as well. :)

    Dottie,
Now there's an idea I hadn't thought about! I may have to try that. :)

    Happy weekend,
    Karen

  22. I rarely ever go out of my way to listen to music when I write. I write either early in the morning in near silence (there's always the humming sound of the central heat going on and off, and the ticking of one of our clocks, the sound of my dog's claws on the floor, and the mewing of our cat), or I write in the evening when I'm at a dance studio, so there might be classical, hip hop, or top 40 music playing in the background.
Sometimes I listen to music before I start, but not during my writing time. I find lyrics distracting . . .

  23. *waves* I only like the farm sounds when I'm down at my office writing. When I'm back up at our house I love to hear Christopher's gabbing.

Amigo, I have a hard time commenting these days. The hackers you know. So I'm making this quick. I am deleting the blog after October. Moving to WordPress. Miss you and love you bunches.

  24. Tyrean,
I think that's the way it is for me too - the lyrics can be distracting. Background stuff, like the clock and computer are okay. :)

    Robyn,
Hey amigo! Missing you around the blogosphere. Hope you get those hacker issues figured out soon. Hope too, that hubby continues to mend. Praying!

    Happy weekend,
    Karen

  25. Hi Karen,

I need total quiet when I write. Too much input = stress for me.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  26. Definitely contemporary music!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Susan,
Me too! I have been thinking about trying instrumental. It would help block out the neighbor's beagle, I think.

    Lydia,
It's interesting to see what everyone likes (or not), isn't it?

    Blessings,
    Karen

  28. I don't listen to anything when I write, but I like all genres, so it depends on my mood.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Claire,
My mood has much to do with it too. Thanks so much for coming by and commenting. It's great to meet you!
    Blessings,
    Karen
