Are You Yourself?

"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."

Oscar Wilde

Today's original post isn't done yet. Last week was full of deadlines, and there are more in the queue this week. So rather than stress over finishing, I decided to save it for next Monday. I hope you don't mind. :)

This quote has always intrigued me; it causes me to consider who I am and where I'm headed. Not a bad thing for the new year, yes? Speaking of thinking, if you happened to miss this recent post, Training Your Brain, we had an interesting discussion about where our thoughts take us.

What's your take on Mr. Wilde's quote? Do you believe your writing reflects your true self? What are you working on this week?

Happy writing,
Karen

  1. Yes, I think so, but it's hard for me to reveal much. I make things vague because it is difficult to be open.

Oscar Wilde. I think his quote was his way of explaining himself. I'm just being me! But sometimes he shouldn't have done the thing or said the thing. ;)

  2. I take it to mean be the best at what you do, not what everyone else does.

  3. Not really doing much in the writing department this week. My MIL is staying with us indefinitely after a week in the hospital mid-January. Taking a hiatus from the blog, but going to try to get back there this Friday. Would appreciate prayers for Mimi's healing.
    Blessings, Karen!

  4. I just don't have any other option, I suppose. But I do remember as a kid, wanting to be like the popular girl in class. That just didn't pan out.

  5. Sandi,
It's hard to imagine how we come off to others sometimes, too, isn't it? We may be ourselves but their perception might be something else.:)

    Alex,
I agree. I think there are a number of ways you can look at this. Probably all depending on how you view life! :)

    Martha,
Sorry to hear about your MIL's challenges. Will certainly pray! Will look forward to seeing you again on your blog.:)

    Lee,
Ha, well this is true too. I recall wanting to be like others as a teen - not completely, just certain aspects. We are what we are, right? :)

    Happy writing,
    Karen

  6. Love this quote! Sometimes the most simple words are the most profound :-) We do spend too much of our lives comparing ourselves to others. What a great reminder of each person's uniqueness. Wishing you the best as you work to meet your deadlines, and just know you gave us food for thought this week with this post...

  7. The first two words of the Oscar Wilde quote say it all. We are not to put on airs and we are not to act like others. I had to learn this as I matured. I have been in a slug-like state since the weather turned bad. I am going to have to MAKE MYSELF do writing and anything else. We filed taxes today. That was an education in itself, (first time filing business taxes.) I did get the narrations written for our Good Friday Drama. We start practice this Saturday. Please pray for the one who will narrate between the scenes. She is trying to recover from bronchitis and mono. (4th time in her life with mono.)

  8. I think about this question a lot. With all the life changes I've gone through these past four years, I feel like I don't know who I really am anymore and am trying to figure that out. Getting a little clearer on who the new me is.

  9. An interesting thought. I always considered my writing to be a collection of inner thoughts and dialog, or my interpretation of people's characters and the like. Someone in the IWSG hop today was talking about how the thing she liked most about writing in her genre was truth--bringing out truths through the human experience. Since each of us has a different perspective on what that means, I suppose our writing would have to reflect our inner truths, eh?

  10. Kenda,
I agree! Simple words spur many great thoughts. Thanks so much for cheering me on to my deadlines. It has been a bit of a wild ride. lol :)

    Cecelia,
We learn so much if we pay attention as we get older, don't we? Will pray all goes well with the program and its members. :)

    Natalie,
You've experienced major life events in these past years, that's for sure. Don't forget to allow yourself some grace as you figure it all out. I think as we get older we're often reassessing this idea, at least I am. lol Take care. :)

    Crystal,
Well now this is a good point! I suppose this quote can mean finding and being our own "voice", similar to our writing voice. Glad you brought this up. How is that sweet baby doing? :)

    Happy writing,
    Karen

  11. I feel I am myself when it comes to writing. When I write from the heart, my writing flows. Enjoy the weekend, Karen.

  12. Linda,
I knew exactly what you mean! And feel the same way with rare exception. Enjoy your weekend as well.:)

  13. Hi Karen, and yes my writing reflects myself. My main character Chase Manhattan is me only better in every aspect. This is a good thing nothing wrong at all. Chase is me. Only he can do things that I will never do nor have the ability to do but would really like to do.

  14. Hi Karen! I love this quote too, because it reminds me that if I'm not myself, then someone will miss what they need from me. And if others aren't who they are supposed to be, I'll miss learning from them too. That's a powerful thought.
I hope you're catching up with all your commitments!

  15. Hi Karen - yes who am I, and then who are you ... we are all so similar. I sure hope life has eased up for you ... but always good to see you around - cheers Hilary

  16. Stephen,
Isn't that great, we can create a better "me"! Gotta love it. :)

    Ceil,
These are excellent points! So glad you mentioned them. Much to think about. :)

    Hilary,
We are, aren't we? Still busy here but getting there. :)

    Happy writing,
    Karen
