Why Do You Write?

Why do you write? I know that you feel called, but beyond that, what makes you feel that way? I'll leave it at that, for I am curious to see what you have to say.

If you are not a writer, why do you do what you do? Share it with us, if you are so inclined. My blogging gang is a friendly bunch, and if they're like me, love to hear what others are passionate about and why.

Blessings and Happy Writing!

  2. Wendy,
Me too! I like the way you said that. "watching my words chase each other on the page." You must be a writer:)

  3. For as far back as my memory allows me to travel, I have loved words. I love their meanings & color, their ability to convey thoughts & emotions. Eventually I began loving phrases; the way in which words were combined to express life's rich hues.

My pen scribbled long before it formed cohesive ideas; but once it began, it hasn't stopped. I still love words & phrases, especially when they knit hearts closer still.

    Blessings,
    Kathleen

  4. Kathleen,
What a wonderful way to put it! I love words and phrases as well:) What an awesome perspective you have - "...knit hearts closer still." I think you've found a good part of your calling!

  5. Good question, Karen. Why do I write? I write because it gives me deep, satisfying joy. I love to have words from my heart spill out onto a blank page or computer screen. Each day when I awaken, the prospect of doing my daily post propels me out of bed. To hear from readers and followers brings more happiness! Writing comes to me as naturally as breathing. Humbly spoken, it is a God-given talent for which I am deeply grateful. To be able to share my writing with others is the epitome of perfection on this earth. Sincerely, Susan from writingstraightfromtheheart.blogspot.com

    Why do you write, Karen?

  12. Eileen,
Those are great reasons for writing! Thanks for asking about my reasons for writing:) I'd have to say that I agree with everyone's thoughts here. I love words and phrases, find much joy and completeness when I write, feel it fulfills what I'm called to do, and all of the above! lol No, it's true, my friends have summed it up quite nicely for me.
    Blessings!

  13. I love to create wildly intense characters who get themselves in the worst possible scenarios, and then watch them dig themselves out. That is super fun!

  14. Heather,
I love that! I'm thinking I need to give that a try. Thanks for sharing and stopping by:)

  15. Hi Karen -

I must write. If I stop, it shows up in letters, cards, blogging, email, you name it. God wired me to write.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  17. I see a story in everything, even if it's just a short story. I see motives for actions and emotions checked by guarded mannerisms. I watch a movie and an idea stems off from a single word. Which leads me to my answer: I love words and the way they fit together to tell a captivating story.

  18. Well, that's is a hard question Karen. I have always liked reading a lot, being an only child I think it was one way to add friends and other members to my family. Then I thought when I was little that I could write a book about the epic life of my great-grand mother. It is not happening!
To top it all, English is not even my first language, yet I feel more comfortable with it, especially the spelling and grammar compared to French spelling and grammar!
I really do not consider myself a writer, but somehow I have ideas and I need to communicate them. Or I have news and I need to share them on my blog with various far away members of my extensive family.
Talking of liking words, I particularly like "White Oleander" from Janet Fitch (I know the book is inappropriate in many places, but so close to real life). She writes as if she was making lace. I love it.
Sorry I went on a bit. Big hug. xxx

Thanks for stopping by! It is amazing how these threads turn into a story or article, isn't it? The ideas keep coming. Happy writing! :)

No apologies necessary; I was hoping everyone would share their thoughts. It's been fun and informative, so thanks for sharing with us! I would have to say that I consider you a writer.
Hugs and blessings to you too:)

  21. I can't not write, Karen. I have words for blood. Take my chocolate, my coffee, even my perfume, but don't take my writing.

  22. Jeanette,
Well said! Never thought of it that way. I'd have to agree. There might be a bit of a struggle if someone tried to take my chocolate though...:)

  24. Terri,
That's a good point. If we were singers, would we still sing if no one were there to listen? I'm with you, I'd be writing even if no one read it. Just have to!
    Blessings:)

  25. Karen,
I stopped in to check out your blog (I always wonder what I'm missing, there are so many good ones out there!)

You, after all are the one who actually guessed the connection to Ellen Robillard and Savannah (She's Scarlet's mother) on my post today at Inkwell Inspirations.

As far as the "why do I write"?
I love the feel of finding the right word, the joy of reading something I wrote and thinking 'that's not bad' and I figure there's a reason why I love it. I will always write, but I don't know if I'd give up so much of my time to do it if I knew I'd never see it published. Because to work toward that goal, I must sacrifice time I could be doing things with family and friends or other things I enjoy.

I'm going to bookmark your blog. Glad I found it--
    thanks for commenting,
    Debra

  26. Karen:
I went through a very deep depression in 1984. I had all these thoughts going through my mind. I had all these feelings to express.
I gained perspective back then and was able to allow God to heal me. Whenever I have a backset, I continue to write.
I agree with all the others. God is in this activity called writing.

  27. Debra,
Thanks so much for stopping by! I enjoyed stopping at Inkwell Inspirations today; I thought she had some tie to GWTW but couldn't remember what. Thanks for filling me in.

Thanks, too, for sharing your thoughts on why you write. I agree, it does take a lot of time and sacrifice. I guess it's about balance and following God's leading. And yes, I'd rather write and be published:)

I'm flattered that you bookmarked my blog.
    Thanks and blessings!

  28. Cecelia,

I am blessed to know that writing was a tool for your healing. God is good, isn't He? Like you, I have to agree with everyone's thoughts about writing. What a blessing to have this many kindred spirits:)

  29. karen,
I smile when I open this blog, partly because I love the shade of green you've chosen and because you always stimulate me with a great thought.

Hmmm. Other than the Audience of One and God called me to do it, I write because the little people in my head bang and kick and scream, and if I don't let them out, my head will explode!!!

Thanks for the compliment! I love the colors too. And I aim to make someone think, even if it is only myself:)

Yeah, I know, there are many thoughts wanting to get out of my head too. I choose to think that's not a scary thing. lol

    Blessings!

  33. I write because I love it. I love to taste syllables and create new word soups. I have to extract the thought pellets that batter my brain. 'Cuz if I don't, get a headache.
