Miscellaneous Monday

What have you been up to lately? Writing? Enjoying fall weather? (Or spring, depending on where you live.)
Been doing freelancing work here, teaching teen writing classes, and working on a plan to bottle this lovely October weather. I've also found a few interesting links, so thought I'd share them this week.

Does Twitter make your heart flutter with confusion? Last week's guest, author Laurel Garver shares great tips on her blog in Building a Twitter Following as an Author: Lessons From the Trenches. You don't have to be an author to use and appreciate her insight and experience.

How does the relationship between agent and writer work? Pen and Prosper's "Ask the Agent" interview with Mark Gottlieb of Trident Media offers an inside look at the process. Jennifer Brown Banks and her guest discuss marketing, myths, platforms, and more.

Complement versus compliment - do you know the correct use for each? If you're not sure, check out this post at the Grammarly blog. While there, try the Compliment vs. Complement Quiz.

Do you use automatic editing tools? The Write Life's post, A Review of 6 Automatic Editing Tools  lists the features and costs of the most popular ones available. A few are free. Good to know!

What projects are you working on this week? Soaking up the October sunshine? Read any good books this fall?

Happy writing,
Karen

  1. Yes, I still don't get Twitter much and don't have the time or interest to learn. I just picked up another big writing job for a client so I'll be writing like crazy this week and getting out in the lovely, warm October weather to walk my dog. Have a great week!

  2. I still have no idea what I'm doing on Twitter.
I'd really like to see some of that fall weather. We're to be in the eighties all week.

  3. Natalie,
Sounds like you have a full week ahead. Wishing you all the best with it! Yes, Twitter isn't my favorite outlet either, but I'm trying to be more active there. Laurel's tips help. :)

    Alex,
I don't know that Twitter will ever be my favorite. But it's not going away, either. Lol Hope things cool off for you. We're to have warm weather too til about mid week. :)

    Enjoy your week,
    Karen

  5. My heart is fluttering today because my book tour begins. I'm using Twitter, but I suspect it's the wrong approach. I seldom just go there and click on links. I still haven't figured out how everyone finds the time. If I cancelled my afternoon nap, maybe? Hi Karen. Thanks for a great list of links.

  6. I need an automatic editing tool for Dragon Naturally Speaking. It always hears me wrong.

  7. Terri,
Glad to hear you are back at it! Although I have been enjoying your side trips with photography. :)

    Joylene,
I'm sure it will be a great tour! As for Twitter, anything is something there, I'm thinking. lol I vote for the nap - the other stuff will still be there when you wake up. :)

    Diane,
Now there's something we should look into. I haven't used my Dragon NS that much yet, but I can see where that could be a problem. :)

    Happy writing,
    Karen

  8. Love the fall colours of the picture! We just got snow here, so if you can find ways to enjoy those fall colours before the white stuff, I'd suggest as soon as possible! I'm working on a poetry university course, and a non-credit creative writing course, as well as maintaining my blog best I can! And all the other life stuff! Great links and will be tucking the editing ones away for the future.

  9. Yup, getting all the sun I can before it goes into hiding. I'm also enjoying the beautiful fall colors.

Thanks for the links and the inclusion, Karen. Have a great week! :-)

  11. Karen, thanks so much for the links. I'm heading over to check out Laurel's post on twitter, as well as the one on editing tools. Topics I need to explore :-) This week's focus? Revisions and dabbling some more in poetry. As for books, I'm reading Wendell Berry's Hannah Coulter. I think he's a writer from your neck of the woods? It's a neat read!

  12. Karen: Thanks for these links. I chose Grammerly a few months ago. Some of the features are nice except some of the suggestions they tell me to change are not what I believe need to be made. Blessings.

  13. Hi Karen - I will get into Twitter sometime soon ... so I'll definitely check out the links.

Autumn is coming isn't it ... I think our cold shock will be on its way this week ... and the leaves are scrunching around ... cheers Hilary

  14. Lynn,
Thank you! Wish I could take credit for this lovely photo. :) Snow already! Well, that happens in Canada, right? :)

    Holly,
I bet you have a riot of fall colors in your area. Enjoy it while you can! :)

    Jennifer,
You are welcome. Thanks for posting share worthy content! :)

    Kenda,
Glad you enjoyed the links! :) Timely topics - I hear you! We can all use a little help somewhere, I'm thinking.

    Cecelia,
You are welcome. Grammarly is supposed to be a great help from what I've heard. Although no program is foolproof, right? :)

    Hilary,
Twitter is still somewhat of a mystery to me, but Laurel's post helped clear a lot of that up. Crunchy leaves here too. Will be chilly before we know it! :)

    Happy writing,
    Karen

  15. Hi Karen! I am trying mightily to get back on track with writing. I have a talk coming up in the Spring, and I just can't seem to get enough time to think or write about it. Sigh... We're having our house worked on, just cleaned out my dad's condo, was host to my sister, and this weekend we're helping my daughter move. Yikes! I may never write again :(
Let's hope peace comes back soon!

  16. I've tried automatic editing tools, but I found I had to double check everything because they got so much wrong.

  17. I don't like automatic anything. I'd rather do it myself--especially editing. But I'm thinking of those automatic faucets and soap dispensers. I usually can't get the water to turn on once I'm soaped up. I love your fall photo, Karen. I was lucky enough to go hiking in the mountains the last few days and was dazzled by the colors around me. All the best, Karen!

  18. Awesome links there. Sue Quinn did a review of auto check programs and show the stats. She caught the most errors with her own eyes, even on top of the grammar programs. They're helpful, but nothing beats the human element for sure.

  19. Of all social media, Twitter is the one that I understand the least.

  20. Ceil,
Life just gets in the way sometimes, doesn't it? I too, have been trying to get to certain projects but they haven't happened yet. All in good time - hang in there! :)

    Lynda,
And so why make more work for yourself, right? :)

    Victoria,
Ha - yes, the automatic paper towel dispensers get me sometimes. :) I've dried my hands on my shirt quite often. lol :)

    Crystal,
Thank you! Yeah, I can't say I'm sold on the idea of the auto check programs. Word's spell check misses things and intentions, so I'm guessing the others do as well. But I'm sure there are some perks too.:)

    Gina,
Yes, Twitter gets my vote for most confusing as well. One of these days I'll take more time and get the hang of it! :)

    Happy writing,
    Karen
